The FDA has issued a warning and advises consumers and health care practitioners to immediately stop using EzriCare Artificial Tears or Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears due to potential bacterial contamination on Thursday, February 2.
The use of these contaminated artificial tears may increase the risk of eye infections and can result in the blindness or death of a patient.
The FDA is collaborating with the centers for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local health departments to investigate a multistate outbreak involving a rare, extensively drug-resistant strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria.
The CDC has identified 55 patients as of Jan. 31 from 12 different states with one death resulting from a bloodstream infection linked to the medication.
