SUNNYSIDE — Most anything that will hold dirt and water can be transformed into a container garden.

Popular in the Yakima Valley are bits of vintage farm equipment like the old mature spreader that Shelley Speck has planted with an array of annuals and perennials for a year round show of color.

“I love my flowers and the manure spreader is one of my favorite gardens, she said.

Most often wood barrels, such as oak wine barrels can be filled with bedding plants. Even the occasional recycled bathtub finds itself made over into a container for flowers, herbs and even cacti.
