The Miss Sunnyside pageant returns this Saturday after having to be canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.
The 2021 edition of the event will be a little different than what long-time participants or fans might expect.
Co-Director Amanda Villareal says it will “feel” a little different than past years and while they won’t have as big a crowd, or the normal show, “We want the girls to have a good time while being safe.”
There will be limited capacity with social distancing measures in place, and the girls will likely have to wear masks backstage, if not on stage. The audience will be masked.
Villareal says this year has been challenging between having to cancel fundraisers or other events, but it has, “Made us come closer together.”
She also noted that the crowning will function different this year as they distance on the stage as well.
The pageant has been going on in some form since 1932, though there was a pause during World War 2.
Diana Blumer-Kilian with the pageant says they hope for normal and that, “Having the pageant is a step to normal. We are so excited about the event and getting back to almost normal.
The Miss Sunnyside pageant takes place at the High School Auditorium Saturday, September 11th at 7 p.m.
