Longtime city councilman and Deputy Mayor Dean Broersma was selected as the 34th mayor of Sunnyside Monday, Jan. 10 at the first council meeting of 2022.

Broersma led the meeting as temporary mayor. He was named temporary mayor in the middle of December 2021.

Broersma was nominated by Councilor Jim Restucci and seconded by Councilor Craig Hicks. There were no other nominations.

The vote was 6-0 in favor of Broersma. Councilor Vicki Ripley was not in attendance at the time of voting.

Broersma was honored with the appointment. “I certainly will do my best to live up to that,” he said.

Jim Restucci was also selected to be Deputy Mayor by a unanimous vote.

The next regular city council meeting will be Jan. 24.
