Funding to build a Park and Ride in Mabton at Governors Park has been secured according to Mayor Laura Vazquez.

It’s part of a larger goal of restoring the Park with new grass, sprinklers, playground equipment and a sidewalk.

“We really want to do something special in that park. In addition to the Park and Ride, at the other end, we have a community garden.”

The city had previously worked on other parks with Governors being the largest they would have to tackle.

Vazquez says the Park and Ride project was $40,000 short in matching funding, but that has since been approved and is part of the work, including paving streets, implementing sidewalks and the new Well #7 project that she believes will improve life for Mabtonites.

“The playground will be placed in memory of Mel Stottlemyre, the former professional baseball player. He was once known as ‘Mabton Mel.’”

The park will have a baseball theme with its benches, a giant bat and ball, and other features.

“My goal,” says Vazquez, “is to have that park functional by the end of next year [2022].”
