The city of Sunnyside will be helping those in need with a Thanksgiving to Go meal for $1 on November 20 from 12-5 p.m. at the Community Center.

Recreation Coordinator Gwen Weder said their goal is to provide 300 affordable meals to the community.

“It will include turkey slices, mashed potato & gravy, green beans, salad & dressing, a roll, a dessert and either a can of soda, a bottle of water or a cup of coffee. We will also have a free craft for the first 150 kids that come by!”

To mitigate risk during the pandemic, the food will be distributed through the kitchen window.

The city is partnering with Sunnyside Safeway, Sunnyside Walmart, Sunnyside Grocery Outlet, Bon Vinos, Prosser Starbucks and Noel PEPSI to help.

Weder says the community Thanksgiving meal began in the 1990s and has changed a lot over the years.

After missing out on the event in 2020, she noted, “We are so excited to be able to offer the Thanksgiving Community Meal in a modified way this year with ‘Thanksgiving To Go!’ and we look forward to seeing the community’s response to it.”
