Valley girls ousted early from state fast pitch tournaments

A Quilcene runner slides safely into third base before Sunnyside Christian sophomore Sophia Halma can grab an errant throw.

YAKIMA — The two area fast pitch teams making it into their respective state tournaments both fell in two games last Friday.

In 1B opening game action, Sunnyside Christian fell, 9-2, to eventual state runner-up Quilcene. The Knights were then toppled, 6-2, by fourth-place finisher Pomeroy at the Gateway Sports Complex.

Sunnyside had a 2-0 lead after six innings, but the Pirates rallied in the sixth inning, to take a 4-2 lead. In the seventh, Pomeroy added two more runs for the final margin.

At the Columbia Playfields in Richland, in 1A fast pitch, Kiona-Benton was edged by Mount Baker, 3-0, in it’s tournament-opening game. Then in Game 2, the Bears lost, 13-1, to Montesano.

Montesano went on to take third place in the 1A tournament.
