The Sunnyside Christian Knights had a big night on Saturday, March 4 with them taking home second place in the WIAA 1B boys state basketball tournament.
After an initial win during the opening round against Cusick the Christian knights were pushed ahead to the quarterfinals where they started their two day journey to the finales.
Entering into the last three days of the tournament the Christian Knights first faced off against the Orca Island Vikings in their quarterfinal match.
The match started off tight with the Vikings leading by one point at a score of 7-6 though that lead did not last for long with the Knights gaining a five point lead by the end of the first half.
The Knights made it to the Semifinals after a nine point win against Orca Island at a score of 56-47.
Heading into the Semifinals the Knights started the game strong; the Knights had gained a ten point lead against the DeSales Irish by the end of the first quarter at a score of 12-2.
The Knights continued to grow their lead throughout the match ensuring that they would take the win, Sunnyside Christian Defeated DeSales with a 14 point lead at a score of 55-41.
Though the Christian Knights had won both of their previous game they unable to pull ahead during their match against the Wellpinit Redskins during the finals.
The Knights had a rough start in their final match with them falling nine points behind by the end of the first quarter and 11 points behind by the end of the first half at a score of 26-15.
The Knights attempted to pull ahead during the second half with them narrowing the gap though they were unable to close it with Wellpinit leading by five points at the end of the game at a score of 55-50.
"The boys enjoyed a tremendous season; obviously, we are a bit disappointed with losing the Championship because we certainly believe we could have played better. However, the entire season was an incredible experience, including the great memories,” said Coach Dean Wagenaar.
Cole Wagenaar led in total points during the tournament with him scoring a total of 53 points during the last three games, Wagenaar was also named player of the year for the Grape Division.
Stats for the Sunnyside Christian Knights during the finals are Cole Wagenaar with three 2-point shots three 3-point shots and one free throw for a total of 16 points, Buddy Smeenk with five 2-point shots and two 2-point shots for a total of 16 points, Isaac De Boer with one 2-point shot and three 3-points shots for a total of 11 points, Sawyer Jensen with one 3-point shot , Dash Bosma with one 3-point shot and Carson Duim with one free throw.
