SHS Cross Country runs for 24 hours

The Sunnyside Cross Country team ran on the new track non-stop over the course of two days to raise money for the program, with coaches Jeff and Shaina White, along with student-athletes Jason Jalifi, Jaime Gudino and Annalee Munoz running the longest distances. Jalifi, a senior, was the top runner on the boys team for the 2021 season.

The Sunnyside Grizzly cross country team held their first-ever 24-hour Grizzlython fundraiser November 10-11.

Coach Jeff White says normally it’s just a 90-minute run with everyone running at the same time, “But our seniors wanted to try something new, so we did a 24-hour relay. It was exhausting and something none of us will forget.”

There were 10 participants with senior Jason Jalifi running the most, 28.5 miles. Coach Jeff White was next at 27.75 miles followed by Jaime Gudino (24 miles), Coach Shaina White (23.5), and Annalee Munoz (17).

In total the group covered 145 miles in various weather conditions including a rainstorm from midnight to 5:00 a.m.

White says proceeds will go towards purchasing running shorts for our athletes, canopies to protect us from the elements at races, and watches to help us keep track of our pacing.

Donations can still be made though the SHS ASB office.
